THE WEDDING PARTY
A wedding can be as glamorous as the dream of the bride, without overstepping the bounds of good taste. There will be mountains of obligations pressing the bride and groom, but take a deep breath and relax because there are others waiting to help. Each member of the wedding party has a particular role in helping achieve “Your Unique Wedding.” You, and the Wedding Planner, will be there to put it all together for the big event.

BRIDE AND GROOM
 Decide budget and wedding plans and hire planner.
 Choose wedding party attendants. The bride helps her attendants in dress selection and the groom discusses appropriate attire with his best man and groomsmen.
 Purchase small gifts for their attendants. Acknowledge receipt of wedding gifts with a personal note of appreciation.

BRIDE
 Discusses budget with fiancé and parents. Sets date, time and place of wedding and reception.
 Selects wedding dress and accessories, allowing a minimum of 4 months for delivery.
 Books caterer, wedding and reception entertainment, florist and photographers, videographer and bakery.
 Helps compile the guest list; chooses her attendants.
 Orders invitations, thank-you notes and personal stationery.
 Shops for trousseau.
 Buys groom’s wedding band and arranges for engraving.

GROOM
 Helps compile the guest list.
 Buys the wedding ring and arranges for engraving.
 Gets the marriage license and obtains any other necessary legal documents.
 Pays for and arranges honeymoon. Checks on available hotels for out-of-town guests.
 Pays for bride’s bouquet, going-away corsage, corsages for both mothers and close female relatives on either side.
 Supplies boutonnieres for himself and male attendants.

Cake Cutting 101

While more and more brides are electing “versions” of the traditional wedding cake like tiers of cupcakes, ice cream centers, desert tables with a wide variety of choices, there is a core group who elect to have the centerpiece cake – either by itself or as an additional choice for guests. The cake is rarely the white cake with white frosting with a ceramic bridal pair standing serenely on top of 3-5 layers.

There is a variety of cake flavors available as well as frosting options. Cake shapes have changed from the standard round to squares and frosting is creatively more decorative than in the past. If you are choosing to include a traditional wedding cake in your reception, consider these points.

    Time it. Decide whether you want to cut the cake at the beginning of the reception just before dinner or just after dinner before the dancing starts. Communicate that decision to the catering staff, the D.J. and your photographer.
    Decide how you want the cake cutting to be announced. You may wish to do it quietly and include just close family and the photographer, but most brides have the DJ make an announcement. It is a traditional part of most wedding celebrations. Some brides choose special music to signal the cake cutting ceremony is about to begin.
    Plan that first cut. You can do whatever you wish, but the traditional cut of two diagonal slices for a thin triangular piece is usually the easiest. You’ll make the cut together – hand over hand – and feed each other a small piece indicating that you will henceforth share all that life has to offer. Please don’t pull any “cake-in-the-face” stunts. That is so not cool.
    Be prepared. Let your caterer know what your plans are and have a cake knife, two plates and napkins at the ready. Alert the photographer, the caterer and the DJ when the event is planned.
    Remember the tradition of the wedding cake and what it symbolizes in your life together.

Improvise

In the rush and urgency of wedding planning, many brides baulk at the prospect of completing a gift registry form. It seems somehow to be awkward for many of them. It feels wrong somehow to list all the things one “wants” on a list for others. However, it would help if the bride looked at her time making “couple” appropriate gift selections as a service to her guests. Wedding guests are going to bring or send a gift. It will be so much easier if they were to know that what they selected matched the couple’s preference.

What is likely to happen to most brides is that they will receive a portion of their registry preferences. They may end up with pieces and parts of the china or crystal or silverware choices they made. We urge them NOT to tuck gifts away awaiting the items that fill out the place settings for china or silver or crystal or all three. Use your gifts and use them frequently. So you don’t currently have enough matching china, crystal or silver for a dinner party for six. IMPROVISE! Take the items you have and create a memorable evening for guests – friends or family. Use what you have to create an evening to remember.

What if you:

Used a vegetable bowl to grow spring bulbs?
Used an eggcup for candlesticks?

The Paper Trousseau

We remind our brides that getting the guest list ready and the invitation order placed is a big job, but it is not the only part of your wedding paper trousseau. In addition to personalized thank you cards, reply cards and envelopes, napkins and programs – there are other paper items to choose.

For a sit-down dinner, select table and place cards. Use paper and ribbons to match your

invitations. Calligraphy will add an elegant and personal touch to each card.

For an evening reception we suggest that you use bright and rich colored inks since the room is likely to be dimly lit. Menu cards tell your guests that you took time to carefully select a well- planned menu for their enjoyment. Use vellum paper stock as it will look special.

Smaller cards can be placed at each plate, or if you are planning a buffet, a framed menu

card at each end of the table works well.

We offer a gentle reminder that once home from the honeymoon, it is time to write thank

you notes. Proper etiquette suggests that you respond within three months after the wedding, thanking people for their presence as well as their generosity.

WEDDING NOTES – RSVPs

It is always amazing to me when seemingly well-educated people don’t get why they should RSVP when the invitation clearly requests it.

Knowing the total number of expected guests is critical at weddings and other large events because of the costs and deadlines involved in meal planning and preparation. But even for smaller social events, I lament the fact that people either don’t know what RSVP means or worse, choose to ignore it.

When working with brides, coordinators and planners are expected to know the social “rules” and to help their clients incorporate them into the celebration planning. Here are a few criteria to keep in mind and share with clients.

As Emily Post says, “No one is obligated to accept an invitation or to explain their reasons for not accepting. However, when someone is kind enough to extend an invitation, one should be just as kind and reply to the invitation.” Unfortunately, this is not always done.

Ask for help. If you have invited someone to your wedding and have included a reply card with a return by requested date and you still haven’t heard back, the best solution is to press bridesmaids or family relatives into helping you contact all those persons who have yet to reply. If a phone call is in order, helpers can say something like this: “Hi _______, this is _________. I’m calling to make sure that you have received the invitation to __________’s wedding. The bride hasn’t heard from you yet and needs to know if you plan to attend. The count needs to be in by ________. Everyone is looking forward to seeing you.” If you are leaving a voice mail message, add “ Please call me back at ________”.

3. Respond in the same manner that the invitation was issued.

If an invitation to an event has come via e-mail then an e-mail response is in order.

Reply as soon as possible. Don’t put the invitation in the “to do” pile unless you need to ask the availability of the other person whose name may be on the invitation with yours.

Keep replies brief. You don’t need to go into great detail about why you can’t attend.

If a reply is not requested, it is not necessary to respond. However, it is nice to acknowledge the invitation and let the host know when you cannot attend.

The Bridal Veil

Veils have always been a symbol of youth and virginity. Formerly, the veil was not lifted until the bride was a legally married woman. Even today, in some cultures this remains the very first time the groom “sees” his bride.

Here at Weddings Simply Unique we remind you that you have options. You may continue the tradition of wearing it over your face until the presiding clergy pronounces you “man and wife.” Then either your groom or your honor attendant will lift it.

Or, you can have it lifted earlier in the ceremony just after your father (or whomever has walked you down the aisle) has placed your hand in the hand of your groom. Typically the groom then lifts the veil. This certainly gives you both better eye contact as you exchange vows. If you are having a double ring ceremony, your honor attendant can lift your veil before handing you the groom’s ring.

Many brides wear a veil but forego the use of a blusher veil that needs to be “lifted”. That seems to many to be less cumbersome. Whichever role the veil will play in your wedding is totally up to you.

Likewise, there are options for you as you walk down the aisle toward your groom. At one time young girls were considered “property” and marriage was a transfer of ownership. The custom of being “given away” by one’s father can be traced to that custom. Today’s bride can choose that “transfer” or have her mother or both parents walk her down the aisle. Then when the presiding clergyman asks, “Who gives this woman?” or better “Who presents this woman?” or “Who blesses this union?”, your mother and father or both sets of parents would reply “we do.” We think that is a beautiful way to start your married life. The options are yours.

You’re married! You received new dinnerware. You are planning your first dinner party. Here are some tips for the big event.

How many people to invite? A dinner party for six or eight is ideal. A successful party depends on the right combination of people so think about personalities and individual interests before you invite the potential guests.

Choose the right table covering to complement your dinner plans. Formal entertaining still calls for a linen tablecloth with matching napkins. Informal entertaining lends itself to colorful cloths with either matching or contrasting napkins. Many hostesses choose to use place mats – either alone or layered.

Adding a special centerpiece can reflect your personal style. Just remember that:

A centerpiece should never block a guest’s view.
The size and shape should be in proportion to the size of the table.
Flowers should not be so fragrant that they overpower the food.

Using candles at the table adds a romantic touch to the dinner. Here are some expert tips on candle use.

Ivory candles are the preferred choice for a classic table setting.
If you keep your candles in the refrigerator they will burn evenly and slowly.
All candles should be displayed with charred wicks and should be placed at least two or three inches apart to prevent melting into each other.
If you forgot to extinguish the candles and some of the wax melted onto the tablecloth, you can remove the wax from a washable cloth by scraping off the excess wax and running boiling water through the fabric.

Following these tips for the first dinner party should help insure that you’ll feel more comfortable in your role as hostess and will be happy and eager to repeat the lovely evening you provided for your guests.

A Prime Location

In choosing the location, the convenience of guest should be kept in mind. By car, the location should not be more than half an hour from the ceremony site. Be sure that the site you have chosen is large enough to comfortably accommodate the number of guests you expect as well as provide the best seating arrangements.

Check to see how many events will be taking place at a multi-event location or how much time is allotted between events schedules the same day. Review any restrictions the venue may have regarding the type, volume and duration of the music. Is there a public address system in house or do you need to provide one. Is there an adequate power supply for speakers, instruments and amplifiers? Does the facility provide a coordinator to cue the musicians for the first dance, toasts, cake cutting and the bouquet and garter toss?

Just to insure that the details are covered you may wish to appoint a wedding specialist to manage the various events so that you and your parents are free to enjoy the party. And if you have seen to these details up front, you will enjoy your special day.

There's Always Room for Paperwork!

It is true – getting married requires a lot of paperwork. Part of dealing with it easily means being organized and collecting as many change forms as you can well in advance of the wedding itself. Remember that women who plan to take the groom’s surname will have more records to change than women who keep their original names. The same will be true for any partner that will be relocating after the ceremony. Prepare all of the forms you can get your hands prior to the wedding. Even though some of them may require copies of your wedding certificate, you can be ready with forms completed and stamped once the ceremony is over. Some couples make it a date night and complete all the forms together over dinner, dessert or coffee. Aside from personal contacts – and wedding thank you notes yet to come – here is a list of some records you may need to change. Ask friends who recently married what other forms or records you should consider.

Weddings are celebrated at a series of unique events. Planning for those events can be an exciting challenge.

Many couples plan a weekend of activities for guests – especially those from out of town. Arranging the activities, accommodations and parties is a big but fun job. If you do not have an event planner working for you on your wedding perhaps you can enlist the maid of honor or other close friend to help organize these activities. The first official wedding event is the rehearsal dinner, usually held on the eve of your wedding following the rehearsal in the church or other ceremony location. It is usually the parents of the groom who host this affair. It can be held in

a home, in the back yard, at a club or the private room of a restaurant.

Do personalize the event with place cards and centerpieces at each table. A strolling musician or other soft music adds charm. The purpose of this event is to give all members of the wedding party an opportunity to socialize and become acquainted. Don’t feel that small children have to be included at the dinner. If some members of the wedding party have small children, arrange for someone to sit with the children or host a separate children’s dinner.

Don’t be tempted to make it a late evening. Everyone needs to look his or her best the next day.

Entertainment

Contrary to popular opinion – music doesn’t just happen. Music must be planned. It is an important ingredient in setting a mood. The good news is that you have lots of options. You can pick live entertainment – high-energy bands, symphonic orchestras, classical trios, disc jockeys, jukeboxes.

The music played at your wedding ceremony does not necessarily set the tone for your reception. But whichever you choose, make sure you have heard the group play live. Ask for the option of attending a ceremony and/or reception where the group you are considering will play.

Where do you find the music you want? You may first have heard of the group from a friend or relative. It should be no trouble to “crash” the event to look at and hear the group under consideration. But be very careful of this. If you involve strangers, the band may consider letting others “crash” your wedding.

What are some other issues to consider as you select the music for your wedding?

What kind of overall look will the musicians under consideration present to your guests? How do they look? How will they dress? Can you request/demand what you consider proper attire? What condition are their instruments in? Will they play the music you request or are they determined to use only their play list?

Most musical groups have CDs or taped recordings. You need to make sure that what you hear on the recording is what you get live. Will whoever you hear be on stage at your event?

Think about how you want the musicians to interact at the wedding reception. Do you want/mind them mingling with the guests or will you prefer that they go to a “breakroom”? Have you made arrangements to feed them if they request it? Do you need to add to your catering numbers and feed them as if they were a guest or can you do sandwiches in the break area?

Just because you “love” a group, consider your reception guests. If you love “Metallica” and your guests are more “Frank Sinatra” how will you reconcile preferences?

Make sure that the venues you have chosen – for both ceremony and reception – can physically accommodate the musical group you have chosen? Think this through before you sign the contracts involved.

Celebrate Your Engagement

You have said yes. You are engaged to be married. Now it’s time to celebrate. Who should host the party to share the happy news?

Planning the party is usually left to the bride and her parents. If possible, it is usually held at a time to coincide with the newspaper announcement. Other relatives and/or friends may give the party if your parents are not able or available to do so.

Any type of gathering - a cocktail party, buffet, brunch or barbecue is appropriate. You may also wish to have a sit down dinner and serve food that reflects your heritage. An international hors d’oeuvres, wine and cheese party or an elegant candlelight dessert party - all have appeal. If it’s a wintertime affair, have a Sunday afternoon open house and serve hearty Irish stew, chili or thick soup along with a variety of breads. During the party your father may propose a toast to the two of you. Remain seated and do not raise your glass to drink. Your fiancé then rises and proposes a toast to you and your parents. After that, you toast the groom to be, your parents and the assembled guests.

Be sure to invite everyone to the wedding who has been invited to the engagement party.

While engagement party gifts are not necessary nor are they expected, be aware that some guests may choose to give an appropriate gift for the occasion. You will of course, send a prompt and sincere thank you.

Invitation Etiquette

We are happy to pass on information about wedding invitation etiquette.

Invitations should be ordered three to four months before the wedding. They are sent to all family members as well as friends of both families. Order at lease 25 extras to cover those special people who somehow managed to escape your list.

When addressing invitations avoid all abbreviations except Mr., Mrs. and Ms. When couples live together, list their names alphabetically on two lines. Envelopes should be addressed by hand, in black ink.

If response cards are enclosed, the pre-addressed return envelope is stamped.

The phase "and Family" is never used on an invitation. The outer envelope is addressed to the couple while the inner one is addressed to Mr. and Mrs. Smith, followed by the children's names (if they are invited) listed beneath their parent's names in order of age.

Mail invitations three or four weeks before the wedding and announcements on the day of the wedding.

A new element has entered the picture. Save-the-Date cards are being used by couples that may have a substantial number of out of town guests. They should be sent at least 6 - 8 weeks prior to the ceremony.

Let's talk a little about weddings, the simple truth is I really enjoy planning weddings, and other special events as each event become milestones in our lives we grow; we grow as individuals and as families. It's all about families, right! I believe so.

The dress, the cake, the invitations, the venue, and all the other necessities of preparing for a wedding and all the other good stuff no doubt captivates us, though a critical part of the wedding process it would not happen if it were not for families uniting. That's what a wedding is really about, the couples uniting and growing to become a family.

The Wedding Rehearsal

Believe it or not we have brides who ask us if they really need to have a rehearsal. They just want to show up on their wedding day and trust that all will go well. We remind them that they are about to produce, direct and star in a major production. No Broadway play goes on without rehearsal. The wedding ceremony should not either.

We believe that to be sure that everything goes smoothly during the wedding ceremony the rehearsal is necessary. The bride and the groom with their attendants (which include the bride’s parents or whomever is walking her down the aisle) should take the rehearsal seriously, arriving on time and properly dressed.

Many years ago the bride chose a stand in for the rehearsal, since it was considered unlucky for her to actually say any of the words of the ceremony before the actual event. Today however, both the bride and the groom take their places at the altar. It is unlikely that the clergyman will go through the entire service, but will talk and walk you through the sequence of events. Most will let the couple go through their responses if they wish.

As well as practicing the processional and recessional, and going through the service, the ushers should be briefed on who will sit in the reserved pews and how the other pews should be filled. Other details like who will roll out the aisle cloth and when, who will escort the mothers, and who will decorate the pews in the unlikely event that the florist will not will be covered at rehearsal.

If special music is to be played, a poem to be read or non-traditional vows said, those should be practiced at the rehearsal so they will be said easily during the ceremony.

The groom’s parents may be invited to attend, but since they do not have an active part in the ceremony they do not need to be there. It is likely that they will be hosting the rehearsal dinner, which follows and would prefer to be at that location attending last minute details. w

Because the invitations reflect the tone of your wed- ding they should be considered early on in your planning activities. Once you have developed your guest list, selected your ceremony and reception venues and decided on the degree of formality you wish to express throughout your wedding, you can comfortably begin to search for your invitations and other printed materials. Do not be overwhelmed by the myriad of choices that are available for you. At one time, there were few options in paper and print styles. Today’s bride has a wide range of both from which to select.

Consider these points as you shop for your paper trousseau.

Take your business to a store that specializes in wed- ding papers. The staff there will have the expertise and experience to help you with paper selections and correct wordings. Their advice can end up saving you time and often money as well.

You will likely be ordering more than just invitations so consider these other items as well: save the date cards, insert cards (directions or other information) RSVP cards, place cards and assignment charts, menus, thank you cards, programs and of course the invitations. Figure in all of the options as you look at pricing.

When you place your order, be sure to order extras of every item. Make sure that you send one of everything to yourself when the rest go out so you can monitor the delivery dates.

Be sure that you allow enough time to order, address and send the invitation packages. Double check with your print specialist on the time frame required for satisfactory order completion. Most experts agree that invitations should go out 6-8 weeks prior to the

ceremony.

Consider purchasing special issue postage stamps rather than just ordinary stamps. Check with your local postal service for the options that may work for you. Be sure to check on delivery times if you select a personalized stamp pattern.

Always, always double-check the proofs of the invitation copy. Have someone else double check you as well. It is easy to skip over and not notice errors in copy with which you are so familiar. A misspelled name can cause unnecessary delays and expense.

If children are being invited to the wedding and recep- tion, their names are usually included on the envelope, clearly letting the parents know that the children are invited. If children are not to be included, just the invited are listed.

To prevent the groom from seeing the brides' face till after the ceremony was over, brides began to wear opaque yellow veils. Not only could the groom not see in, the bride could not see out. Therefore, the father of the bride had to escort her down the aisle and literally give the bride to the groom.

We think of the veil as being oriental because the Eastern bridegroom often did not see his bride's face until after the ceremony. Actually, the veil is older than the harem and rises from the mists of mythology. Ishtar, ancient Goddess of Love, came from the depths to her betrothed, the vapours of the earth and sea covering her "like a veil."

Today, prior to a Jewish wedding ceremony, it is the groom who ritually "veils the bride". The reason for this tradition goes back to the marriage of Jacob to Leah (the older sister) when he thought he was marrying Rachel (the younger sister) whom he loved.

The invention of the wide loom and silk tulle in the 19th century gave women a sheer covering that enhanced their beauty.

The wedding veil symbolizes modesty, privacy, youth, and virginity. That way of thinking still has a foothold on bridal etiquette, as traditionally only a first-time bride wears a veil

The best way to describe the changing nature of receptions is to notice that they have evolved into more than just a formalized event as the term “reception” implies. More and more couples are choosing the term “celebration” to describe the party atmosphere and events they are planning for themselves and their guests. Instead of having the day slip away in a blur, brides and grooms want to have a good time at their party and take away wonderful memories. This is one of the biggest parties that most couples will ever give. They want everyone to have fun – themselves included.

Whether the celebration will be in a church basement or outdoors, one thing that is changing is the seating of guests. Reception “rules” have had the bridal party sitting at formal head tables, lined up according to one’s role in the wedding. But more and more couples are choosing not to have a head table and instead seat themselves with special family members or friends in the center of the eating area. Sitting in the middle of things – among family and friends – not apart from them, will help the couple to better enjoy their first meal together as husband and wife.

The remaining people in their wedding party and families are scattered at tables with other guests to encourage the celebration tone. They can talk about the wedding and events leading up to it that other guests may not know. It can make good mealtime conversation and is a way to involve guests more intimately with the event. You may still choose to have special place cards/table numbers for guests. For some brides and their mothers, trying to engineer the “perfect” mix of guests at each table is the hardest thing they do for the party. Others give up and let groups find their own places. Whether you are having a formal sit down dinner or a buffet, the best bet is to select round tables. These always allow an easier flow of conversation among guests. Providing a centerpiece for each table also places each guest at a decorated space at your party.

If you can’t have round tables and must use rectangular ones, request that they seat no more than six per table. At least with this number, everyone can hear everything that is said and conversation can flow. There is more space for each person to enjoy his/her food and beverage. Bridal Showers

Once an engagement is announced, the party parade can start. Showers are included in the group of parties planned for the newly engaged couples. There may be several showers planned or there may be just one, but there are some shower etiquette tips that brides may find helpful. Who hosts the shower? Friends, not relatives, give showers. Members of the bride’s and groom’s immediate families do not give showers. Often the honor attendant and bridesmaids will hostess a shower. Work colleagues may plan a get together and friends of either family may host a shower. Note that anyone who is invited to a shower should also receive an invitation to the wedding. Bride’s need to consider the expense of showers for members of her wedding party. It is usual for all of the bride’s attendants to be included in the guest list of every shower.

When and where is the shower held? It can be held any day of the week and any hour of the day. It can be a potluck supper, a poolside brunch, an at home party or elaborate event in a restaurant. Showers are usually held from four to six weeks prior to the wedding, with two weeks being the cut-off date. The primary focus of any shower is the opening of the gifts. If traditional games are played and prizes given, the winner should not feel obligated to give the prize to the bride. At one time that was considered “proper”, but the tradition has all but faded away. It is customary to ask someone to keep track of the gifts and the givers. Accurate records will help the bride write thank you notes to each guest. The notes should go out in the week following the shower. It is a nice touch to send flowers to the hostess with her thank you note.

While “all girl” events are still standard, couple’s showers are increasing in popularity and offer a slightly different approach to “showering” the engaged couple.

Guest Seating

Here at Weddings Simply Unique, LLC our brides ask lots of questions about how certain wedding traditions came into being. We are happy to share the source for many of the unique and time-honored customs all of us have come to know. A recent bride asked us why her parents/family/friends were to sit on one side of the church and the groom’s family/friends sit on the other. She asked us “Does it matter?” The answer is that while the seating “rules” are generally followed, many couples choose to provide balance to the church seating arrangements rather than adhere to the guidelines that have been in use for a very long time.

Here’s the history of that tradition. Brides can decide if they wish to maintain it. In ancient times, brides were often abducted or stolen or sold. To marry for love and by mutual consent is a relatively contemporary idea. When warring tribes decided that they would no longer battle, peace was generally arranged through intermarriage. That act made them family and they would not/could not fight and cause bloodshed. Members of both tribes would attend the marriage to witness the joining, but they maintained a little distance between groups so that a fatal interruption to the ceremony could be avoided.

Now when the bride’s family sits peacefully on the left hand side of the church and the groom’s on the right, you know the origin of the tradition.

It doesn’t matter how long you spend planning it or the number of people who assist you – there is always a chance that “ Murphy” will visit your wedding and maybe even bring friends. While you may not be in control of everything, there are some things you can do to prevent problems from occurring and minimize those problems that do.

If possible, arrange to have a wedding planner/advisor available to assist you at the beginning of your preparations or hire one to oversee all of the details for you. Make realistic plans to begin with. Don’t create undue stress and complications by planning an event that is out of your financial means, the time available or who you are.

Be organized and disciplined. Stick to your plans and stay focused. You will eliminate wheel spinning, indecision and wasted energy.

Pay attention to details. You can prevent big problems later if you pay attention to the small print now. As the experts say, “The devil is in the details”.

Stay positive. Remember why you are getting married in the first place. When the wedding preparations seem to take on a life of their own and you find yourself wondering if it is all worth it, remember why you are doing it. You are celebrating the union of your two lives. That’s a big thing and worth a little chaos. Make decisions. Don’t dither. Trust your gut instinct. And if early decisions don’t work out, make changes.

Stay flexible and be ready to detour if needed. How you view road bumps has a lot to do with how you handle them. Be prepared to either go around them or skim over the top of them.

Don’t be a “ bridezilla”. What an appalling way for a woman to behave under any circumstances and over plans for a day which is to celebrate her new life, it is unacceptable.

Be prepared for some things to veer off plan. Anticipate them and have alternatives at the ready.

Marry on a Budget

Our consultants plan lots of big elaborate weddings. But they also help brides who want to marry but are short on funds. There are plenty of ways to have elegance on a budget and work with what is available. One of the most significant money saving decisions you can make is to plan your wedding in the off-season. Depending on where you live, November and January can be slow times. The seasonal slow down may be different in other areas, but the laws of supply and demand work in all seasons. When demand is down, supply may well cost less. And supply can include wedding apparel, reception locations, food service, flowers, and a range of other wedding related items.

If you are determined to have a spring or summer wedding, consider having a morning ceremony, followed by a brunch buffet. You will find more locations available early in the day and the food served will be far less expensive than a sit down dinner.

If your budget is truly tight or your family is fragmented, you could well consider a small and intimate wedding. It is not only less expensive, but it is more easily controlled.

It can be beautiful and romantic and memorable. Instead of a wedding for 150 guests, a gathering of family and very close friends can be more meaningful.

If yours will be one of 3 or 4 weddings in a given church in busy months, try to work with the brides planning the other weddings and coordinate your church flowers and décor. Expenses shared can reduce your flower bill.

Brides who stay organized often save money on their wedding expenses. They gather and keep every receipt in a file and log every expense by category. Budgeted expenses are easier to meet when you pay attention to decisions made and contracts signed.

Decide which of the major wedding related expenditures are most important to you. Is the gown the major expenditure or the reception or the photographer or the honeymoon? Look at covering that expense first and then adjust the remaining funds accordingly. Reconsider if you really need to give a small “gift” to everyone who attends your wedding. Think about those you have received. How did you feel about them and where are they now?

Good Ideas from Other Bides

Over the years we have gathered many good ideas from the brides we’ve served. They are anxious to share those with new brides. Make sure that you mail yourself a complete wedding invitation to your own wedding. Don’t open it. Keep it in your guest book and save it for future generations to open. For a colorful and meaningful decoration, make flag-like banners using fabric in your wedding colors and sparklepens. Write family names and events and dates and history on the flags and use them to decorate your ceremony and/or reception space.

Ask all relatives and guests to write a favorite recipe on the back of their RSVP card. File these cards in a special recipe box and use them in your married life. Write a love letter to each other on the evening before your wedding and mail on the way to the ceremony. Save them to be read on your first anniversary. If you can’t decide on colors for your wedding, use your birthstone colors as the theme for everything. Finances permitting, consider having fireworks at or after your rehearsal dinner.

Assuming the style of the rings permit it, always engrave initials or names on the wedding rings and the date on each. Have a “for married couples only” dance at your reception. Give the DJ a list of names of couples attending and the number of years they have been married. After dancing several bars, the DJ then reads off the couples’ names and they leave the floor, leaving the longest married couple on the dance floor alone. Wear two garters. Throw one and keep one to pass down to future generations. Sew a good luck charm on the garter to be kept and ask that each succeeding bride do the same.

Hire an airplane to fly over the ceremony site towing a sign that reads “Congratulations to ____and ________. Buy a new silver dollar with your wedding year on it and add to the collection by buying one on each anniversary. Handle Your Wedding Like a Business!

While every bride dreams about her weddingand how it will be, the reality is that creating that dreamed of event requires real work. It requires planning and conferences, contracts and negotiations, purchases and coordination. Some experts have estimated that the average ceremony and reception will require 250 hours of planning. How to handle this “second job”? The best advice is to treat your upcoming nuptials like a business. You need to get your tools together. Just like you do at your workplace, you need the right tools to get the job done. So get organized. Gather pens, paper, staplers, and file folders. Set aside a special place in your home for all wedding related materials. It can be a special drawer or a spot on the kitchen counter or a separate table. Just make sure that all the information concerning your wedding is kept in one place.

Buy an organizer and keep it up to date. It will be invaluable to you. According to a survey by BRIDE’S magazine, 20% of 2700 engaged women would rather lose their wallets than their wedding planners. Keep track of all names, phone numbers of people who are assisting with this wedding in anyway. Keep careful notes of any conversations, plans and promises made. Set goals and give yourself deadlines. Then stick to them. Record them in your organizer and makes lists of your upcoming tasks plus expected completion dates. Then comes the hard part – stick to them. If you are tempted to try and do them all at once or let some slide, think about how you would explain to your boss at work why you missed a deadline. Appreciate how you work. When are you at your best? Are you a morning person? What about your work schedule? Can you take any time off? Try to schedule appointments that work well with the rest of your life. Hire a professional. Businesses do this all the time. If they have a special project that require special attention within a specific timeframe, they “bring in a specialist”. They hire a consultant whose sole focus is the special project. You can do that as well. Consider a wedding consultant.

A Word About Decorating!

If money were no object, you could simply tell a wedding planner/designer the look and effect that you wanted and trust in a fabulous result. But if you would like to have a wonderful setting for your wedding and reception without breaking your budget, we can offer you some elegant but cost saving ideas. If your wedding is one of several being held in a large church on the same day, consider coordinating the décor and floral elements for the location with the other brides. Many times shared expenses on rental greens and plants can create a marvelous setting with minimal costs. Remember that ceremonies held in churches already have an impressive setting. Try to minimize your efforts to add personal touches to the atmosphere of a church. You are being married there, be aware of the role the atmosphere plays in the solemnity of the occasion. Enhance it with your additions, not detract.

For both ceremony and reception locations budget for the most bang for your dollar. Tone on tone floral arrangements have more visual impact than more costly mixed floral groupings. Create a statement with one large decorative element rather than a dozen smaller and less effective elements scattered throughout. For example, a working fountain in the center of the dinning room may create all of the atmosphere you wish. Concentrate on wow by focusing your decorative efforts at the entrance to your reception area. It will be easier to do if you visualize the room full. Don’t spend excess money on items that only the first few guests entering the room will notice. Once the room is full of guests, lots of décor touches won’t even be noticed. Most experts will advise you to skip decorating the skirting on any of the tables for that reason. Their advice – THINK TABLETOP AND UP. If your guests do not dance, don’t spring for an orchestra. Think trio to play background music and atmosphere.

If the facility offers it, lighting that can be changed – lighter, brighter, softer, dimmer – can transform the room as the activity level changes. Some couples choose to have their combined initials cut in either metal or glass. These silhouettes can be placed in front of lighting sources and be positioned to shine on walls, floors or ceilings. The cost is minimal but the effect can be impressive.

The Traditional White Wedding Dress

Traditional wedding dresses as we think of them today in America consist of a full-skirted white satin gown with high neck and sleeves of lace, and a veil headdress, both trimmed with lace and pearls. It is natural to assume that this style has been around for centuries and worn by everyone, since it is the traditional style. However, the style is reminiscent of what was worn only 150 years ago in the mid nineteenth century. This tradition, like many others, is not static and unchanging, or really very old. The styles and colors of wedding dresses have varied according to the fashions of the time, and the circumstances of the wedding.

Some Special Touches

As an experienced certified wedding specialist I can help you create a wedding that is uniquely and meaningfully yours. Many ideas come from other weddings we have helped to plan as well as ceremonies to which we have been invited. Here are some of the best ideas from most recent weddings. There are several versions of this wedding day diary but we think this one is special. Our bride placed pens and 5x7 sheets of colored heavy stock paper – pre-punched - in the middle of each of the round tables at her reception. A personal note from her and the groom sat in small frames at each table. Inside the frame was a note from the bride asking her guests to each take a sheet of the colored paper and write a short note to the couple. It could be their thoughts and well wishes, a memory they shared or advice for making the wedding last. One of the bridesmaids was asked to gather up all of the sheets at the end of the reception and get them to the bride and groom. They were the focus of the “after” party that the newly weds held with family and close friends and remained a treasured memento of the day.

Another couple we worked with hired an artist to sketch various scenes from the ceremony and reception. This was in addition to photographs being taken. Simple pen and ink drawings of ceremony and reception highlights have added a wonderful and powerful reminder of the unique and personal ceremony that characterized this wedding. It was fun for guests to watch the artist work during the cocktail hour. When he had completed the wedding sketches, he was free to do some work for guests who requested a special rendition for themselves. If your wedding is to be a large one, you might consider hiring one artist to focus on the ceremony and a couple of others to float at the reception sketching groups of people or tables or the cake.

Don’t believe “experts” who say that themed weddings are “out”. If you want one, they are “in”. There are endless ideas that will appear as you consider a theme for your wedding. Your clothing, food and decorations can center on any theme you wish, but in the final selection it should be a theme that has obvious meaning to both of you. You can choose an old fashioned wedding, a rural t h e m e, an historical theme, a color, a flower, a place, a piece of music, an ethnic influence, a food or even a favorite play. New Beginnings

With the growing importance of second and even third marriages, couples are searching for ways to make their new wedding ceremonies meaningful. Chances are excellent that either or both parties have had the BIG first wedding. They don’t wish to replicate that but they do want a ceremony that provides focus and an opportunity to express what this new marriage means to them. Many couples marrying for the second or third time have families that they are trying to blend. It can be a difficult and emotional effort to make everyone feel apart of the ceremony and the new lives being united in this marriage.

It can be an even bigger task when there are grandchildren to be included. Our wedding planners are seeing older couples being married and have found ways to make that wedding important and personal for the bride and groom and their extended families. One of the loveliest weddings we’ve seen involved an older couple – both of whom had been married before and widowed. They wanted a way to include their families in the ceremony. A wonderful concept but their view included not just grandchildren but great grandchildren as well. Frankly, there were too many of each to find a meaningful way of including them in the usual roles. The answer was simple and very moving. The bride walked down the aisle alone. She walked slowly carrying an empty flower basket. She stopped briefly at every pew that held a grandchild or great grandchild. (The ushers had specific instructions of where to seat everyone) At every stop, a child placed a flower in her basket. By the time she reached the altar her basket was full of beautiful flowers from each family. It was not only a beautiful arrangement, but a wonderful symbol of the lives each had before finding each other.

Some Reception Thoughts

We are always asked about ideas for receptions. We have answered lots of questions from brides who wonder what to do. Feel free to stop in and ask the WedPlanLady for answers to your questions. Here are some of the questions we are asked.

How can I handle guests who respond to the invitation and state on the reply card that the number planning to attend is larger than the number invited?

If you truly can't handle the additional guests, we suggest that you turn to your maid of honor or a tactful bridesmaid. Ask her to call the guests and explain that the bride would love to extend her guest list, but unfortunately it is impossible. The reason? Budget concerns or space already filled. If the person is offended – and some will be – they are not true friends. After all, they were the ones who have overstepped the etiquette boundaries. Often, the "extras" are uninvited children. To avoid this situation, the reception card should read, "adults only reception". Emotions are involved in these situations; so don't get upset if people sometimes act rudely.

Everyone seems to have an opinion about what I should and shouldn't do at my wedding. How can I please so many different people?

We suggest that you do not try to impress anyone. Long after the event is history, it will be your creativity and warmth that are remembered, not the suggestions that you did not follow. Have pots of your favorite flowers as table centerpieces, serve local specialties, label tables with your favorite places or hobbies, assign singles to a partner, place nibbles at strategic places, and be generous with warm greetings. The success of your reception depends on efforts to create warm hospitality.

Reception Music

Reception music can be any variety you choose depending on the mood you want to create.

For the receiving line/cocktail hour you may choose soft background music played by a pianist or a string quartet.

This softer background music may continue through the dinner hour as well. Some parties may use recorded music at this part of the reception and replace it with a live band for the dance.

Whatever method you ultimately choose, don't let the music selection be the last decision you make. It is important. The right music and the right musicians can add to or detract from the success of your party. So find the group you want and make the arrangements as early as possible.

Make sure that you interview a few groups or DJ's before you make your decision. Ask to hear them play. Discuss fees, how many hours they will play, what they will wear and how long the breaks will be. You may wish to have recorded music played during the breaks.

When you select the music for your reception, don't forget the ages of your guests. Make sure that your musicians can play a variety of song styles. Try for a mix of fast and slow songs. If you have special m u s i c, give a list of those tunes to the group's leader. Let him/her know about the probable timeline for important happenings you plan like the grand entrance, the first dance, cake cutting and throwing the bouquet/garter. A Prime Location

We believe that the secret of planning a fabulous stress-free reception begins with finding the right venue. Here is some sound advice to help you avoid costly mistakes. As soon as the date is confirmed with the clergy, contact should be made with the manager of preferred venues to check on availability. If you do not have a place in mind, consider options such as hotels, banquet halls, historical sites, parks, art galleries, museums, or the theater (you will literally be at center stage). In choosing the location, the convenience of guest should be kept in mind. By car, the location should not be more than half an hour from the ceremony site. Be sure that the site you have chosen is large enough to comfortably accommodate the number of guests you expect as well as provide the best seating arrangements. Check to see how many events will be taking place at a multi-event location or how much time is allotted between events schedules the same day. Review any restrictions the venue may have regarding the type, volume and duration of the music. Is there a public address system in house or do you need to provide one. Is there an adequate power supply for speakers, instruments and amplifiers? Does the facility provide a coordinator to cue the musicians for the first dance, toasts, cake cutting and the bouquet and garter toss? Just to insure that the details are covered you may wish to appoint a wedding specialist to manage the various events so that you and your parents are free to enjoy the party. And if you have seen to these details up front, you will enjoy your special day.

Brides often ask us to explain the proper way to introduce the wedding party at the reception. Our first suggestion is to ensure that the post ceremony pictures be taken as quickly as possible so that guest can be greeted without a long delay. Guests should be served appetizers and something to drink while they are waiting for the bridal party to arrive. If both sets of parents are going to be held at the church for a bit, it is wise to ask a couple who are friends relatives to serve as host and hostess until parents and the bridal party arrive at the reception site. Once the bridal entourage arrives at the reception, the DJ or band leader or maitre d’ asks everyone to stand while he introduces them. Since the bride and groom are the stars of the event, they are introduced last. Parents of the bride, parents of the groom, the “little people”, bridesmaids and groomsmen, the best man and maid of honor are then in this order. We know that it takes a happy combination of events and plans to have a perfect wedding. Here are a few tips you may wish to consider to help you have that one perfect day. If you are worried about a guest list that is too long, assemble an unedited list of names and ask everyone involved to rank the names from most to least important. Then ask people to cut a designated percentage from their lists. Don’t even consider sending invitations to an “A” list, only to invite someone from a “B” list when someone from the first list declines. To determine the size of the site you’ll need for your reception, investigate the parking lot and number of rest rooms at the facility as well as the size of the reception room. The rule of thumb for toilets is one for every 25 guests and one parking space for every two guests. Always have at least one attendant assigned to your gift table at the reception even if you are not planning to open and display gifts there – which by the way, is the best and preferred way. If parents and step-parents contribute money for your wedding, it is much better to pool the money. Then no contributor will demand to take control of how the money is spent.

We answer lots of questions about men's formal attire. White tie refers to the most formal attire. It requires that males in the wedding party and all male guests wear black tails, matching black pants, white pique wing collar shirts, white pique vests, bow ties and studs. Today's standards to allow some variations like wearing shirts that are not pique. White tie and tails is traditional for evening weddings. Contemporary standards do accept this attire for grooms any time of the day with groomsmen wearing black formal attire. Black tie describes party or eveningwear. Tuxedos fall into this category. A tuxedo has a standard length coat with some dressy trim and matching pants although many designers are also showing a slightly longer coat silhouette. Today a black tie affair may have the gentlemen in tuxedos with any color tie and matching cummerbund of coordinating vest. A morning coat refers to daytime formal attire. The coat has either a black or gray coat with matching striped pants, gray vest and a black and gray striped four-in-hand tie or ascot. The two main guidelines for grooms are that his formalwear should not clash with the color scheme the bride has chosen and his attire should compliment - not upstage the bride's gown.

Traditional wedding dresses as we think of them today in America consist of a full-skirted white satin gown with high neck and sleeves of lace, and a veil headdress, both trimmed with lace and pearls. It is natural to assume that this style has been around for centuries and worn by everyone, since it is the traditional style. However, the style is reminiscent of what was worn only 150 years ago in the mid nineteenth century. This tradition, like many others, is not static and unchanging, or really very old. The styles and colors of wedding dresses have varied according to the fashions of the time, and the circumstances of the wedding.

The Bridal bouquet should compliment the bridal gown.

The Bridesmaids bouquets should coordinate with the dresses worn by the bridesmaids.

The groom traditionally pays for the bridal bouquet, all the boutonnieres (except his own), the corsages and the rehearsal dinner flowers.

The Bride’s bouquet is traditionally made of white flowers such as stephanotis, orchids, roses, lilies of the valley, gardenias, carnations, or sweet peas. Included are fillers like baby’s breath, ferns or ivy for greenery.

The traditional bouquet should be carried low so as not to hide the details of your dress.

The groom’s boutonniere should be different from the groomsmen’s.

You should arrange to have a toss away bouquet made for the bouquet tossing and make arrangements to have your bouquet preserved.

Family Wedding Gown

Many mothers have carefully saved their own wedding gowns for their daughter’s to wear. It is a lovely thought but few brides take advantage of the offer these days. It is not that they don’t appreciate the link such a gown provides between the generations, they do. They just want their own gowns. We have the solution. Stop in and talk with one of our experienced consultants about how to incorporate the heirloom gown or portions of it, into your preferred wedding gown look. There are ways to capture the sentiment in this inherited gown. If the basic structure of the gown works for you and the fabric is still in good shape, consider having a skilled professional make slight adjustments to the length (longer or shorter) and modify some of the features such as sleeve length or detail. “Harvest” some the lace from the heirloom gown to add to your gown or veil. The lace might work as an overlay or be fashioned into rosettes to trim the gown. Some of it might be used as a sash or trim at the waist. Some of the material from the gown can be used as the base for your wedding bouquet. Work with your professional floral designer to find ways to incorporate the fabric. Sometimes the fabrics are just too different to blend. You might consider displaying the heirloom gown at your reception and use it as the centerpiece for a display of family wedding photos – yours and his – to focus on the traditions and linkage that you, the new couple, represent. If you are working closely with one retailer on all of your wedding attire, it is possible that you could borrow one of their mannequins for the evening. Most stores now feature the dress form without arms, heads and wigs that could distract from the gown. After your wedding you may wish to have both gowns cleaned and preserved to pass down to yet another generation of brides. w

We know it has long been a tradition for the bride to toss her bouquet and allow her garter to be removed by the groom and tossed to his bachelor friends – or even auctioned off. These traditions came from our English cousins, where long ago spectators at the wedding would attempt to tear off the bride’s clothing, believing it allowed them to share in the couple’s happiness. While the bride was fleeing her attackers, she would toss her flowers to the on lookers to placate them. Tradition says that those catching the bouquet and garter will be the next to marry – though not necessarily to each other. This tradition is changing. A modern version of this is to ask their attendants to sign the bottom of the bride’s shoes. The last names to be erased will be the next to marry. Today’s bride often opts to present her bouquet to the grandparents or to the couple in attendance that has been married the longest. She may also reject having her leg exposed, garter removed and tossed to a group of men. For couples who still wish to follow the tradition, an extra garter is purchased. How much food is enough?

If you have hired a professional caterer, don’t worry about it. They always plan for enough. Running out of food would be a huge blow to their reputations, so it rarely if ever happens. But if you are planning on handling the food for your reception here are some hints.

If you are serving “plated” meals, caterers usually figure per person – 6 to 8 oz of main dish ( meat, fish or vegetarian), 4-6 oz. of starches like rice or potatoes, 4 oz of vegetables and 6 oz of salad. They may also bump up that number by 10% to be sure.

Buffet meals tend to double the amount shown above. People tend to make more than one trip to the buffet table. Consider your guest list. Age, gender and activity levels of your guests will determine the volume of food they are likely to consume.

Gems and Rings

Before rings became the symbol of engagements, it was customary for the couple to break a silver or gold coin in two. One half was kept by the man and the other half by the woman to symbolize the marriage act. Another early betrothal custom was for a young man to weave a bracelet of human hair (his) and offer it to the girl he hoped to marry. If she accepted it, that bracelet symbolized that their lives were woven together for life. At one time in Denmark, it was customary and considered quite correct for an unmarried couple to exchange rings and live together for one year. If they were happy for the year they stayed together for life. But if not, they returned the rings and went their separate ways, each free to choose another. The custom was called handfesting. (With This Ring, by June Jenkins) Even though the plain gold band has been the symbol of true and everlasting love since Roman times, couples have found ways to enhance its simple but powerful message. Although some brides prefer colored gemstones, the overwhelming choice of today’s bride is the diamond. And the diamond’s history adds to its popularity. Ancient superstitions claim that the diamond’s sparkle was born in the “fires of love”. Wearing a diamond was a guarantee of happiness. Because of this superstition, many people consider the diamond to be the only true engagement ring. But today’s brides may also choose the emerald or pearl for their engagement stone, or a sapphire which is said to bring good luck. To wear a sapphire was to invite the favor of the gods. Other brides may choose amber which is said to prevent illness or coral which brings good luck. Jewelers can show you a wide range of prices and styles for your wedding and engagement ring choices. Always buy from a reputable jeweler with the confidence of knowing that whatever early tradition you follow, you are choosing each other and the ring as a symbol of that choice.

Weddings and Children

If children are included in the wedding party – as ring bearers, flower girls, junior attendants or servers, they have added a special touch to the ceremony. They will also find the reception fun – if perhaps a little intimidating. Only you will know how involved you’d like the children to be in the reception itself, but if it will be a long one, with a wedding dance, you may wish to consider a “mini” reception for the children of the wedding party and of guests. Certainly let the children of the wedding party be the ones to introduce you to the room at the reception. Some consultants suggest letting more outgoing ring bearers and older junior attendants, help to seat guests at the reception. Consider having a separate bar set up at the reception for the kids. Provide juice, water, punch or soda. For wedding celebrations with several children in attendance, many couples arrange for the children to spend some time at the reception, but then adjourn to a special children’s reception where there may be movies or DVDs, or special entertainment. Hire babysitters or young adults to supervise the room. Before they leave the reception or dance, arrange to have a couple of songs popular with the young so that they can dance should they wish. Provide each child with a special lunch box or backpack filled with games, coloring books, dolls and other toys to keep them occupied while their parents are at the reception. We specialize in helping brides plan for and select the perfect invitations and wedding stationery. It is unlikely that you have organized and sent out so many pieces of a paper trousseau before so do allow our trained experts to help you. Traditional guidelines exist for wedding invitation wording and we can help you through the list. However, many couples are choosing to move away from the traditional and wish to incorporate their own style. We can help you with that choice as well. Know that our experienced staff has been helping brides to create the perfect invitation for years. Because the invitation sets the tone for the wedding you have planned, it is important that it be selected with care. It makes the first impression on the guests so we urge you to make your choices with the same attention you will pay to the rest of your wedding. Arriving at the guest list for your wedding and reception is one of the early tasks you will need to undertake. Here are some of the points you will want to consider as you create your guest list.

a. What style wedding are you planning? If you have chosen a formal, traditional wedding that will likely drive your choice of wording, paper stock and print style. If you are planning a smaller, more casual affair that choice can be reflected in the style of invitation you choose.

b. What size wedding are you planning? If you have a large event planned with a separate reception to which everyone on the guest list will be invited, you will need to have that number when you come to order your invitations. If it is to be a small intimate ceremony with a larger reception either that day or in another city, your paper needs will be different. Your budget will also help you decide on who and how many guests to include.

c. When determining the guest list, it is usually divided 50/50 between families of the bride and groom. However, many circumstances can change that division. Today’s older couples, who have extensive networks of their own friends, may choose to compile the list with 1/3 each for the bride’s family, the groom’s family and the couple.

d. Unless money is no object and you can invite the “world”, guests’ lists usually have to be “trimmed” once the first draft is compiled. You will want to consider some categories of guest that could move from invited guests to friends receiving announcements. Maybe the number of business associates can be trimmed, or friends you haven’t seen in a decade or the children of friends. Work together as a couple to create the list you can afford. Do keep in mind that the general rule on events is that one can expect 15-20% of those invited to decline - for one reason or another. Talk over the implications of that with one of our experienced event planners.

e. If you wish to limit the number of children attending, know that if you have invited friends who have children and have not included the children’s name on the invitation that is an indication that you do not wish them to attend. Family members and friends can spread the work that you are unable to accommodate children. It can be touchy for some friends and family so think through the implications before you send the invitations.

f. In addition to the guest list you have developed, invitations should be sent to the groom’s immediate family, the wedding officiant, the wedding party and their spouses or dates even thought they have been “invited” informally.

g. Depending on your politics, you may wish to consider sending an invitation to the President of the United States @ The White House in Washington, DC. You aren’t likely to have the “First Couple” in attendance, but you are likely to receive a greeting from and signed by the President and First Lady. That makes quite a keepsake. Getting The Message Out About Your Wedding!

We encourage our brides to talk about their wedding plans so that we can help them with their invitations. Save-the-date cards are an important part of your plans, especially if the bride is inviting many out-of-town guests or if the wedding is being celebrated over a holiday weekend. Ideally, they are sent out as early as six months prior to the wedding. Because invitations offer guests a sneak preview of the tone and formality of the wedding, much thought should be given to the selection. Formal wording should be used for formal and church weddings. Individuality can be expressed by choosing unique sizes, textures, colors, overlays and ribbons. While announcements are nice to send to those friends who live far away, invitations are a bit more personal and give the recipient a chance to attend or not. Unless the wedding is an ultra intimate affair, a reply card with a self-stamped, preaddressed envelope should be enclosed. Optional enclosures can be added such as dinner preferences, or, if it is a weekend affair, guests may be given the option to choose activities they would like to attend. Invitations should be mailed ten to twelve weeks before the event, especially to guests that are far away.

Do I have to have an open bar?

That depends on how important it is to you and what your budget can support. An open bar is likely to be your most expensive option since it will be necessary to cover a wide range of tastes and choices. It also depends on the facilities offered by your reception site and the time of your reception . More and more couples are choosing alternatives to the open bar. Please note that having a cash bar is not one of them. It is considered tasteless and tacky – rather like inviting guests for dinner and then charging them for it. More preferred options include:
• An open bar with time limits – say during the cocktail hours only.
• Offering a signature cocktail only, along with wine and beer.
• Serving punch – both non- alcoholic and a regular version.
Having champagne passed by gloved servers.
Predetermine the number of bottles you want served and stop service when that amount is
used.

Attendants and the After Party

Attendants
In the old days of marriage by capture, a maiden was guarded by her family to prevent seizure. In later years, this drama was enacted as a sort of game at country weddings. The bridegroom, gaily attired, coming for his bride, was confronted by a bevy of maidens all dressed exactly alike. His part of the game was to detect his true love, “forsaking all others” and bear her away to the church. As recently as Victorian times, brides’ maidens often wore white dresses and even short bridal veils to look like brides themselves. The best friend was designated first bridesmaid. Today we use the terms Maid and/or Matron of Honor. Modern adaptations of bridesmaid dresses have emerged from this tradition. Today’s maids should wear gowns that complement the bride’s gown in style, formality and coloration. We suggest that the bride do some preliminary shopping, choosing styles, fabrics and colors. Then ask the maid of honor to help make the final decision. If body types vary, and they usually do, we suggest the mix and match approach. Consider separates. Many manufactures make skirts in different styles and tops in a variety of looks – all in the same fabrics and colorations and lengths. Each bridesmaid can choose her favorite look. The result is more individual flattering looks and fewer complaints. You can then tie the scene together with the same flowers, jewelry, shoes and headpieces for each. We recommend that you keep your attendants informed of all plans. Do not dictate hair styles and no one should be required to wear something that makes her uncomfortable. Your attendants are friends and family who are there to support you on this special day but be careful not to demand too much. Stop in and talk over your plans and ideas for attendants. The After Party
It has become a favorite practice of many couples to continue the reception fun AFTER the official party has ended. Because so much time and effort and planning has gone into the wedding event – parties, the ceremony and the reception – more and more couples are electing to plan smaller and more intimate parties after their guests have headed home. Usually included in these events are parents (if they are still in a party mood), members of the wedding party and close friends. While couples are anxious to spend time alone, they also want to keep the party going on a slower pace. Here are some ideas for your “after party”. Be sure to let those close friends and family know about this “after party” so they can plan their time accordingly. You can include a special invitation inside the wedding invitation or send one separately. It would be wise to let these invitees know that the after party is “exclusive” so they don’t “spread the word”. If your wedding is in a hotel and you are staying there, the natural gathering spot is your suite of rooms, or a smaller party room in the facility. Make those arrangements at the same time you are booking your reception. Maybe there is a small, intimate jazz club or cigar bar or all night breakfast spot that is a favorite of yours. Arrange with the club management for your party to arrive at a specified time. Arrange for special foods. Select food and refreshments that are quite different from those served at your reception. You can do wine and cheese, hot hors d’oeuvres, fondue (chocolate and fruit or cheese and bread).

While traditional wedding touches remain an important part of every bride's planning, many choices are more contemporary and reflect a couple's desire to make their ceremony and celebration as unique as they are. Here are some of the trends we are seeing for this year. Weddings today are both mixing and matching. an invitation may combine ribbons of paisley and stripes while bridesmaids can often be seen in similar colors but different styles. Reception seating may include round tables mixed with square or oblong ones. Centerpieces may be a combination of both tall and low arrangements. Unconventional colors are in. Brown is a big color now, pared with creamy shades of white or ivory or pastels in pink or blue. Burnt orange paired with ivory, red and yellow. Imagine a cake iced in chocolate fondant with ivory and pink sugar blossoms. Fruit is frequently used when decorating for weddings. Pineapples, a symbol of hospitality , are being used in many destination weddings. Pears - the perfect "pair" - make an obvious choice for cake toppers. Bowls of cherries add color to table settings and marzipan fruits elegantly packaged in glassine bags make a wonderful guest gifts. Your Paper Trousseau

Here is a check list you can use as you prepare to order the invitations and other paper items that you will want and need for your wedding event. Our consultants can help you find the perfect items to compliment the theme and style of your unique wedding.

a. Invitations - Once you have selected the paper style, print style, ink colors and have chosen the proper wording to reflect your degree of formality, always order more invitations than you think you’ll need. Consider adding the imprinted return address to the outside envelope.

b. Announcements - These are sent to the people who have not been invited to the wedding because of distance, people who are only acquaintances or to those whom you know would be unable to attend. An announcement is a nice way to inform people of your marriage. It does not obligate them in any way since gifts are neither required nor expected.

c. Reception cards - Used when the ceremony and reception are at different locations or when a select number of people are invited to a smaller reception.

d. Ceremony cards - Used when a select number of people are invited to the smaller more intimate ceremony. They are enclosed with the broader audience invitation to only the reception.

e. Response cards - provided for guests to indicate their acceptance or decline of the invitation.

f. Pew cards - used for large formal weddings where special seating is arranged. When guests enter the church they present these cards to the ushers so that they may be seated in the appropriate area.

g. Save the Date cards - growing in popularity, they alert guests to the upcoming nuptials and give them time to schedule attendance. These are sent well in advance of the invitations and are usually sent to out of town friends and relatives.

h. Thank you cards - small cards, usually folded, bearing married names or monograms for thank you notes written after the ceremony or the bride’s maiden name or monogram for notes written for gifts received prior to the ceremony.

i. Ceremony programs - which list names of attendants, organist, vocalist, officiants, parents as well as lists of songs, prayers, and readings. Distributed by the ushers as guests are seated.

j. Other items you may need or wish - like at home cards or the name of a calligrapher can be provided as you work with your print consultant.

Changing Traditions

An updated version of this says that those who catch the bouquet and garter will be the next to marry. But times are changing and today's bride often chooses to present her bouquet to grandparents or to the couple in attendance who have been married the longest. The newest version of this involves having the attendants sign the bottom of the couple's shoes. At the end of the evening, the last names to be erased or worn off will be the next to marry. Instead of a low key slow dance to the traditional "first dance" more and more couples are taking dance lessons so that they can WOW the crowd with their performance. This trend can be attributed to a fascination with DANCING WITH THE STARS, a revived interest in ballroom dancing. or just a need to continue the "star" quality of the day. Couples are practicing and learning the Tango, the Texas Two Step, the Rumba and the Fox Trot.

Change the traditional father/daughter dance by including all fathers and daughters in the gathering to dance with the bride and her father. Make it a slow dance and have the band play everyone's favorite from FIDDLER ON THE ROOF. Don't like cake? Don't have cake. Feel free to have an ice cream bar, a pie bar, coffee bar for desert and employ a much smaller cake for photographs. And oh yes, those famous "made for you only" cocktails are still in and popular. Give it a clever name and serve it to guests during the cocktail hour if your wedding includes one. 

Marriage is still a serious and sacred event, but today’s etiquette allows for many innovative and personal ideas to tie the past to the present. More and more couples are choosing to exchange personalized vows, which express their own feelings. Holding ceremonies, which unite children and parents as a family are increasingly popular. The European influence is felt in weddings where children as attendants replace traditional bridesmaids. Growing in popularity are weekend weddings that begin with a casual rehearsal dinner on Friday and end with a creative brunch on Sunday. Because many families have members who live across the country, a weekend wedding allows time to renew family bonds wild providing time for golf, tours and sightseeing. According to June Jenkins, an expert on the history of wedding traditions, “A Kiss for Luck” is more than just a memorable lyric from a Carpenter’s tune. She maintains that “kissing began when men of Greece wanted to know if their ladies were drinking wine on the sly and a kiss on the mouth provided them with evidence.”

But it is more likely that the tradition was established at the conclusion of early marriage ceremonies. It was customary for the priest to give a benediction kiss to the groom. The groom would then kiss the bride. The priest and groom both kissed the attendants and they in turn kissed the wedding guests. Even today, weddings are filled with lots of hugs and kisses.

European superstitions maintained that it was lucky for a bride to see a chimney sweep (think Dick Van Dyke in MARY POPPINS) on the way to church. It was especially lucky if the chimney sweep would stop and offer good wishes. If he chose to kiss the bride, happiness was “practically guaranteed”. The superstition was so widespread
that frequently chimney sweeps were paid to be present when a bride went by.

It became popular for the groom to kiss the bride to seal the marriage contract. But in order to insure a happy marriage, the bride had to cry after the kiss or her marriage would be filled with tears.

In the Middle Ages, many of the people were illiterate and unable to sign their name.
Therefore, they made an X in place of their signature. No legal documents were considered legal without the X. To show good faith, they would kiss the X in the same way that they kissed the Bible when taking an oath. In time the X became the universal symbol of affection and the kiss. An enterprising romantic later added
the O and we now have XOXOXOX s on letters, notes and text messages. 

Are you really saving by stocking up on sale items you might need? Absolutely Not! Don't get carried away thinking you are going to save money by stocking up on gadgets you see online or elsewhere. By all means, if you have a real need for seventy-five do-hickies, then buy them, but don't buy with a vague plan in mind, it is wasteful and eats at your budget, and creeps you closer to going over budget and not having the funds you need for that centerpiece.

Every cent counts! Start saving change in a jar, you will be pleasantly surprised and how quickly the loose change grows. I once started taking all my change (small and large bills and coins) and put in a jar. The goal was to buy a new phone and wanted to see how much I could save. I was quite surprised when I tallied up the bills and coins in a short 6 month span; over $130! Start your change savings.

A wedding is about sharing your special day with family and friends, usually people you socialize with frequently. Once you have secured the site for your ceremony and have met with the officiant and/or his representatives you should have a good idea about ceremony requirements and guidelines. Working within those guidelines, you should be able to add your own personal touches with the goal of creating a beautiful setting that helps to create the mood for your ceremony to come. As guests arrive, the setting – candles, lights, flowers and music can create an impressive atmosphere. Instruct ushers to make friendly small talk with guests as they arrive and as they are escorted to their seats. This will help to put guest at ease. If yours is a small wedding, ushers can present a single flower to female guests along with a note from you welcoming them to the wedding. This welcome flower can also be presented with the programs. Consider having ceremony hosts greet guests at the entrance doors. Choose one from each family who is likel to recognize many of the guests as they arrive. Choose host couples to welcome your guests. Your parents may be mingling with guests at this point or may be needed with the wedding party. Guests hosts can welcome people in their name. If you have music playing as guests arrive and are seated, change that music – tempo or volume or both so that special music plays as the parents of the bride and groom are seated. More and more couples are choosing to have a card or note from them along with a single flower or small wrapped gift waiting in the pews for the parents as they are seated. Consider having a special song played as the groom and his best man take their places. As the processional begins, the music should break between the ceremony and the reception to allow for travel time. Arrange for a pre-cocktail hour at your reception site so that guests arriving early for the reception have a place to gather. You may wish to serve champagne or have a coffee bar set up.
